Some of you may already be aware of certain Intuit QuickBooks Desktop versions that were already removed from Intuit’s platform because you had one of those accounts or came across information about it previously. Many QuickBooks desktop users switched to a different QuickBooks desktop edition. Here are updated details about QuickBooks desktop that some users may or may not have obtained yet, especially since a lot of business owners that have seasonal type work do not look at their bookkeeping until late in the year or the beginning of the following year.
Intuit began phasing out traditional QuickBooks Desktop software by discontinuing sales of Pro, Premier, and Mac versions to new customers on September 30, 2024, and will cease offering technical support and critical features for all remaining Desktop plans by 2027. Users with ongoing subscriptions for editions like 2024 Pro Plus will continue to receive some updates and support for a limited time, but the shift is a clear push towards QuickBooks Online and the newer version of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for continued functionality.
What’s Happening:
- No New Sales – Intuit stopped selling QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, and Mac subscriptions on September 30, 2024.
- Support is Ending – Beginning in 2024, Intuit began phasing out critical support for older versions.
- QuickBooks Desktop 2022 lost support and integrated services like payroll and online banking on May 31, 2025.
- Support for the 2024 version will be discontinued by May 31, 2027.
- Existing Subscriptions – If you have an active subscription to QuickBooks Desktop Pro or Premier, you can continue to renew it for now.
Why This is Happening :
- Intuit’s strategy is to encourage businesses to migrate to their cloud-based QuickBooks Online solution.
What You Should Do:
- Plan Your Transition – If you are a user of an older platform of QuickBooks Desktop, you must plan to upgrade to a newer, supported plan or switch to QuickBooks Online.
- Check for a New Version – You can upgrade to newer supported versions of QuickBooks Desktop, such as Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or the still-available QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.
- Consider Alternatives – Explore QuickBooks Online for a cloud-based solution or QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for continued desktop software operational capabilities.
Is QuickBooks Online AI:
Although there are a percentage of AI features within QuickBooks Online, at this time it is mainly only cloud-based software. Its fundamental identity is a cloud accounting solution. While QBO is now actively integrating AI, its core functionality and main value proposition are still built on its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud model.
The Foundation is Cloud-Based Technology:
- Accessibility from anywhere – As a cloud-based platform, it allows you to access your financial data from any device with an internet connection. This is a primary difference between QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks desktop.
- Automatic updates – Updates and new features are rolled out automatically through the cloud, so you are always using the latest version of the software without any manual installation.
- Real-time collaboration – The cloud allows for seamless, real-time collaboration between bookkeepers, team members and accountants who can all access and work on the same financial data simultaneously.
- Secure data backups – Being hosted on Intuit’s servers, your data is automatically backed up, reducing the risk of data loss.
